Majestic: Creature?

From Cecelia Norman: I don't remember this one. In that treasure box of Suzy's does she have Creature fromThe Black Lagoon?

  1. Several writers have mentioned the Majestic theater in recent posts. When I moved to Temple in 1956, the theater was already closed. Movie goers had to drive to Walters, the drive-in 6 miles north of town, or occasionally to Wichita Falls to see the latest flick. In the fall of 1959, our colorful band director, Mr. Dean, about whom I and others have written previously, decided to re-open the theater for a week as a fund raiser for the band. Three movies were shown and there were good crowds all week. The only movie I remember was "Imitation of Life", a real tear jerker starring Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, and Mahalia Jackson. Troy Donahue had a bit part in the film. The movie still shows up on cable TV about every other week. Despite the fan support, no one was willing to reopen the theater. Two or three years later, a traveling preacher held forth for several nights in the building but he soon moved on to greener pastures. So far as I know, that was the last hurray for the Majestic.
