My parents, Dewey & Lucille Keck, moved there in 1951 and I born in 1952. The theatre plays a role in naming me. The management always gave out play cards (mini theatre posters) or cards that looked like a calendar with the movie schedule on it. One movie that was featured on a card was entitled, "VICKI". My parents were picking out names and liked that name in case they had a girl. They would practice calling out the name from different parts of the house to see how it sounded. They liked it, so they changed the spelling to Vickie and added the middle name, "Sue", after a family member. I still have the movie card which my mother saved. (I am just glad I was not a boy.....the name they chose was Gregory Keck. ) :)

My memories of the Majestic include using the 3-D glasses to watch "13 Ghosts", the sticky floors from all the spilled drinks and someone throwing gum from the back and it getting stuck in my hair. By the time I was a teenager, the movie was closed. After that we all went to Walters on Friday or Saturday nights (the Preview was at Midnight on Saturday), the Drive-In out at the six mile corner on Sunday nights and going to Wichita Falls or Lawton to the theatres there.

I have memories of so many stores and restaurants downtown and it saddens me that most of them are all gone. There was a time when Commercial and Main Streets would be full of cars parked up and down the street as well as in the middle. We would never have imagined then that things would ever change.

Thanks, Harold for all your efforts putting together the museum.

Vickie Sue Keck Nowlin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914257305849660953.post-45312511674909422532011-06-04T10:41:53.952-05:002011-06-04T10:41:53.952-05:00I just want to say that it's nice to see these...I just want to say that it's nice to see these old pictures of Temple. Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Ginn, Mrs. Harrel, just to name a few. These teachers cared so deeply about their students. I can still remember the time that Mrs. Ginn gave several of us girls a busting. Us girls had decided that we were not going to study for a upcoming test that Mrs. Ginn was going to give us. We all failed the test. Mrs. Ginn chopped her own firewood. She gave us a hard busting, but we sure studied from then on for every test that she gave us. That was the only time that I ever had got a busting in school. Temple Public Schools had some great teachers and examples when I went to school back in the 60's and 70's. I am still proud to be a Temple Tiger to this very day.Brenda Norton Yarbroughnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914257305849660953.post-78277073297478544122009-05-09T13:52:00.000-05:002009-05-09T13:52:00.000-05:00MI remember the plane crash well. I will forget about this site from time to time, but when I get John's latest email, I typically spend a couple of hours catching up.

I really enjoyed reading Kathy's recollections of Mrs. Mae Blair. I was extremely afraid of her. Being in the 7th grade, new to junior high, I was pretty insecure anyway, and then to have Mrs. Blair as a teacher really got me going. My sister, Kerry, loves to tell this story about Mrs. Blair, but I have to give a little background that she leaves out.

In 1970 I was in the 5th grade. I was firmly entrenched in the Temple school system having moved to Temple half way through my 3rd grade year. During that 5th grade year a new kid moved in; his name was Eric Claunch. I hope I am spelling his last name correctly. Eric was a very outgoing kid and a tremendous athlete. We played football together in the 6th and 7th grades. He reminded me a lot of Brett Gunn. He would have been a tremendous asset to our football team, but he moved away shortly after we entered junior high.

Eric would do or say anything. He even had the nerve to flirt with the older 6th grade girls, and he was the new kid. Wow! He always had that look that made you wonder what was coming next, and something was always coming. I am not sure if split classes (mixed grades in the same class) were unique to Temple, but I was in several. Mrs. Blair's class was one of them. Some of my 7th grade classmates shared her classroom with some of the 8th graders. Eric Claunch was in that class.

We probably didn't get into any more trouble than any other class, but Eric seemed to push the envelope in any class. I believe Mrs. Blair knew she had to stay ahead of Eric to keep him in line, and I think she did for the most part. You didn't get much past her. That is the background.

On one particular day, we had a memorization assignment of some sort in Mrs. Blair's class. The way I remember it, prior to class beginning on that day, it seemed we were all intent on the final prep for the assignment. In other words, there wasn't the normal chatter before class. Mrs. Blair was at her desk, completely in control as always, and Eric walked into class. Eric had his hands behind his back, and he gave the whole class this look that said, "Watch this!" The beauty of the whole thing was that we had no idea what he had planned. Eric walked up to Mrs. Blair and the coversation went something like this:

Eric : "Mrs. Blair."
Mrs. Blair : "Yes, Eric."
Eric : "You smell....(long pause)"

When he said that, the entire class gasped audibly; we thought the world was going to end right then and there. You could physically sense the fear in that room. We all knew Eric was toast, but we feared that Mrs. Blair would find a way to implicate the whole class. After the pause, a long pause mind you, he said, "...like a rose.", and he gave her a rose that he had been hiding behind his back.

The class came unglued. I am not sure her class was ever the same after that. I would love to have known what she thought that day. She never mentioned it. Being the astute 7th grader that I was, I do believe she saw Eric in a different light after that. You would actually catch her smiling at something he said or did from time to time after that. Maybe she did appreciate a good joke.Ed Deutschendorfnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914257305849660953.post-85253919733584409912009-05-06T07:24:00.000-05:002009-05-06T07:24:00.000-05:00Yes, there is great peace and beauty in the countr...Yes, there is great peace and beauty in the country.
